Casa Lleo Morera (Lleo Morera House)
The third gem on the Block of Discord, Casa Lleó Morera is Domènech i Montaner's Modernista masterpiece, famed for its lavish floral decoration and exquisite stained glass.
You're standing before Casa Lleó Morera, the third jewel in Barcelona's legendary Block of Discord, and arguably the most delicately beautiful of the three competing Modernista mansions. This extraordinary building represents the pinnacle of Lluís Domènech i Montaner's architectural genius, completed in 1906 for the wealthy Lleó Morera family who made their fortune in the chocolate and confectionery business. Look up at the façade and notice how Domènech i Montaner has created what seems like a flowering garden carved in stone. The building's most striking feature is its abundant floral ornamentation, where roses, thistles, and mulberry leaves cascade across the surface in an intricate botanical symphony. These aren't merely decorative choices – the mulberry motif is a clever play on the family name, as "morera" means mulberry tree in Catalan. The architect has literally woven the family's identity into the building's DNA. The ground floor showcases spectacular bay windows that curve outward like blooming flowers, each one crowned with delicate stone tracery that filters light into geometric patterns. These windows were revolutionary for their time, maximizing natural light while creating an almost ethereal quality to the interior spaces.
