Welcome to Casa Amatller, one of Barcelona's most enchanting examples of Modernista architecture and a crown jewel of the famous Manzana de la Discòrdia, or Block of Discord. As you stand before this magnificent building at number forty-one Passeig de Gràcia, you're witnessing the brilliant vision of architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, who transformed a conventional nineteenth-century building into this fairy-tale mansion between eighteen ninety-eight and nineteen hundred. Look up at the building's most striking feature, that spectacular stepped gable crown that gives Casa Amatller its distinctive Dutch-Gothic silhouette. This theatrical roofline, inspired by Flemish architecture, creates a dramatic contrast against Barcelona's Mediterranean sky and immediately sets this building apart from its neighbors. Notice how Puig i Cadafalch has masterfully combined pink stone with exposed brick and ceramic tiles, creating a polychromatic facade that shimmers in the changing light throughout the day. This architectural marvel was commissioned by Antoni Amatller i Costa, a wealthy chocolate manufacturer who had built his fortune in the booming confectionery industry of late nineteenth-century Barcelona.
