Welcome to Plaza de Colón, or Columbus Square, a grand and bustling nexus where some of Madrid’s most important arteries converge, marking a significant gateway between the elegant Paseo de Recoletos and the vibrant Salamanca district. As you stand here, feel the pulse of the city around you, but also take a moment to look up, for this plaza is dominated by a majestic tribute to a figure who profoundly shaped history: Christopher Columbus. Directly before you, rising dramatically into the sky, is the Monument to Christopher Columbus itself. Erected to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus's first voyage to the Americas in 1492, this neo-Gothic masterpiece, inaugurated in 1892, truly commands attention. Designed by Arturo Mélida, its soaring white marble column culminates in a statue of Columbus, rendered not as a triumphant conqueror, but as a pensive, visionary navigator, gazing westward into the horizon. Take a moment to admire the intricate carvings at the base: allegorical figures representing Discovery, Religion, History, and Art surround bronze reliefs depicting pivotal scenes from his transatlantic journeys, from his departure from Palos to his arrival in the New World. It’s a powerful symbol of Spain's imperial legacy, its age of exploration, and the enduring, complex connection it shares with the Americas.
