Monumento a Alfonso XII (Monument to Alfonso XII)
A grand colonnaded monument overlooking the Retiro lake, completed in 1922, with an equestrian statue of King Alfonso XII flanked by allegorical bronze figures.
Here you stand, by the tranquil waters of the Retiro lake, gazing upon one of Madrid's most magnificent and evocative landmarks: the Monument to Alfonso XII. This isn't just a structure; it's a grand stage where history, art, and nature converge, beckoning you to pause and absorb its splendor. As your eyes sweep across its majestic semicircular colonnade, crowned by an imposing equestrian statue, you feel the weight of a nation’s tribute to a monarch whose short reign left an indelible mark on Spain. This monumental tribute commemorates King Alfonso XII, often known as "El Pacificador" – "The Peacemaker." His reign, from 1874 to 1885, marked the Bourbon Restoration, a crucial period of stability after the turbulent First Spanish Republic. Though he ascended to the throne at just 17 and died tragically young at 27 from tuberculosis, his impact was profound, ushering in a period of relative peace and constitutional monarchy. It was his widow, the sorrowful Queen María Cristina, who spearheaded the initiative for this grand memorial, funding it through a national popular subscription, demonstrating the widespread affection and respect the young king commanded from his people. The monument itself is a triumph of early 20th-century eclectic design, conceived by the architect José Grases Riera, though completed after his death by Teodoro Anasagasti.
