Parque de la Devesa (Devesa Park)

The name "Devesa" comes from the Latin "defensa," meaning a protected or defended place, and indeed this land has been safeguarded for centuries. Originally lying outside Girona's medieval walls, this area served as common grazing land for livestock and a gathering place for local communities. The transformation into a formal park began in the nineteenth century when city planners recognized the need for public green space as Girona expanded beyond its ancient boundaries. Look up now at the towering giants surrounding you—these are London plane trees, or platanus, some reaching over fifty meters in height and dating back more than a century. These remarkable specimens create one of Europe's most impressive urban tree canopies, their massive trunks requiring several people to embrace their full circumference. During spring and summer, their dense foliage forms a natural cathedral ceiling, filtering sunlight into dappled patterns that dance across the pathways below. In autumn, you'll witness a spectacular golden transformation as thousands of leaves carpet the ground in brilliant yellows and browns.
