You're standing before the Museo de Arqueologia de Catalunya, magnificently housed within the Romanesque monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants, a building so beautiful it's practically a museum piece itself. Built in the twelfth century, this former Benedictine abbey represents one of the finest examples of Catalan Romanesque architecture in existence, and today it serves as the perfect guardian for Catalonia's archaeological heritage. As you approach the entrance, notice the stunning facade with its perfectly preserved Romanesque portal. The intricate stone carvings around the doorway feature geometric patterns and religious motifs typical of the period, while the solid stone construction has weathered nearly nine centuries with remarkable grace. The monastery's bell tower, rising majestically beside you, served as both a call to prayer and a symbol of the abbey's importance in medieval Girona. Step inside and you'll immediately understand why this location was chosen for the archaeology museum. The monastery's soaring stone arches and ribbed vaults create an atmosphere that perfectly complements the ancient artifacts within.
