Teatre Grec (Greek Theater)

Standing before you is the magnificent Teatre Grec, one of Barcelona's most enchanting cultural landmarks nestled into the lush slopes of Montjuïc mountain. As you take in this spectacular open-air amphitheatre, you're witnessing a remarkable fusion of ancient Greek inspiration and early twentieth-century Catalan vision that has become the beating heart of Barcelona's summer cultural scene. The theatre was constructed in 1929 as part of the ambitious preparations for Barcelona's International Exhibition, when the city was transforming itself into a modern European capital. The Catalan architects Ramon Reventós and Nicolau Maria Rubió i Tudurí designed this amphitheatre as a faithful homage to the ancient Greek theatre at Epidaurus, that legendary venue where classical drama first flourished over two millennia ago. Notice how the semicircular seating arrangement, called a cavea, is carved directly into the natural hillside, following the classical Greek principle of working harmoniously with the landscape rather than imposing upon it.
